Experimental engineer

Exotrail is hiring!

Exotrail is a space company based in France. We are developing mobility solutions for an agile space.

Our mission is to allow small satellite constellations to move in space, so that we can optimise their deployment, increase their performances and reduce space pollution. Thanks to this, a new world of telecommunication, Earth observation and space exploration will arise.

Our mobility solutions range from highly flexible high-thrust propulsion systems for small satellites (ExoMG™), mission simulation and operation software (ExoOPS™), and orbital transfer vehicles (SpaceVan™).

Exotrail launched in 2017 and has secured over 17M€ from prestigious Venture Capital funds and public grants. Our team consists of 30 people who are passionate about disrupting the space industry. We operate out of two locations: Toulouse and Massy (suburb of Paris).

This is only the beginning. Small satellites equipped with propulsion will be able to deliver new space services and will entirely disrupt the space industry by servicing, repairing, assembling and manufacturing spacecrafts directly in orbit. Join us and be part of our great ambition!

Job Description

Exotrail is designing Hall thrusters for small satellites. This development involves numerous experimental activities and we are looking for an experimental engineer to support the development team. Various activities will be part of the daily job:
• prepare, execute and analyse results of tests on prototypes of Hall thrusters in our vacuum chambers;
• execute and analyse results of tests on qualification and flight models of our propulsion units - including electronics and gas management subsystems;
• prepare, execute and analyse results on various research projects, including cathodes, anodes and other plasma-related devices developments.

This position involves working in a lab environment, with the following equipment:
• vacuum chambers use;
• power and data acquisition electronics;
• plasma diagnostic devices.

The selected candidate must prepare and perform the tests. These activities include the definition of the test hardware and software, installation of the experimental setup and the planification of the tests. Your main goal is to execute the test and extract meaningful information out of it. This information will be presented and shared with the development team in a very iterative and flexible way. You will also be responsible for the specification, design, upgrade and deployment of test setup.

You will mainly based in our offices in Massy, but a significant part of the work will be carried out in the ICARE laboratory in Orléans as part of our common laboratory ORACLE.

Your team is composed of experienced professionals in plasma physics, material science, electronics and test setup. You will report to the thruster head R&D leader, who, in turns, reports to the CTO.

Preferred Experience

Exotrail is looking for a pro-active candidate. The candidate must have hands-on experience with laboratory equipment, willing to experiment and to critically analyse the results. They shall have a Master's degree in an engineering field related to aerospace, mechanics or physics. The candidate should have 2+ years of experience, but junior profiles will also be considered.

In this position, you will be responsible of many of the experimental work done in Exotrail in collaboration with our electronics engineer and plasma scientists. This position requires a high level of autonomy and very good communications skills. The candidate must always look for information to efficiently perform its various duties.

This role requires the following skills:
• You are not afraid to work in a changing and challenging environment;
• You are familiar with electric propulsion and have hand-on experience in this field;
• You have a critical mindset and want to understand the behaviour of your experiments;
• You are willing to take measured risks;
• You have a high degree of autonomy;
• You have deep technical skills with a real interest for the topic covered in this job offer;
• You have great communication skills, both writing- and speaking-wise;
• You have good technical writing skills and you are proficient in English;
• You want to bring agility to space and develop new services based on high-level technologies;
• You are interested in working in a start-up environment.
