Exotrail is a space company based in France. We are developing mobility solutions for an agile space.

Our mission is to allow small satellite constellations to move in space, so that we can optimise their deployment, increase their performances and reduce space pollution. Thanks to this, a new world of telecommunication, Earth observation and space exploration will arise.

Our mobility solutions range from highly flexible high-thrust propulsion systems for small satellites (ExoMG™), mission simulation and operation software (ExoOPS™), and orbital transfer vehicles (SpaceVan™).

Exotrail launched in 2017 and has secured over 17M€ from prestigious Venture Capital funds and public grants. Our team consists of 30 people who are passionate about disrupting the space industry. We operate out of two locations: Toulouse and Massy (suburb of Paris).

Job Description

Exotrail is at the forefront of the development of various subsystems which we later integrate into a complete propulsion unit for small satellites. This leadership role in the community of the small electric thrusters involves an important role of research activities performed both in-house and through ORACLE, our common laboratory with the prestigious EP lab ICARE (CNRS, Orléans, France).

We are looking for a research engineer to manage various research programs already started in the company and to provide additional support for new research projects. Among the projects already put in place are the following:

  • NEMESIS consortium (H2020 project funded by the European Commission): development of a breakthrough new generation of hollow cathodes with the use of a novel material
  • Various R&T projects from the CNES on Hall thrusters
  • ORACLE common laboratory with ICARE
  • Internal research projects on innovative anode and cathodes for Hall thrusters: both from a plasma point of view, but also for industrial applications.

Your daily job will be both to manage and execute these research projects. Thus, your daily tasks will be the following:

  • Organize the research effort with our partners: reporting towards partners, financing bodies, etc.
  • Plan and execute research activities, mainly related to plasma physics, but also involving electronics, thermal and material sciences;
  • Report both on a scientific level, but also for industrial applications;
  • Prepare and present papers for leading conferences in electric propulsion.

Your team is composed of experienced professionals in plasma physics, material science, electronics and test setup. You will report to the thruster head R&D leader, who, in turns, reports to the CTO.

Preferred Experience

Exotrail is looking for a pro-active candidate. The candidate must have hands-on experience with research activities and must willing to experiment and to critically analyse the results. They shall have a Master's degree in an engineering field related to aerospace, mechanics or physics. A PhD in one of these fields will be much appreciated. The candidate shall have 2+ years of experience.

In this position, you will be responsible of various research projects done in Exotrail. This position requires a high level of autonomy and very good communications skills. The candidate shall be interested in research activities, project management linked to research and industrial applications of its research. The candidate must always look for information to efficiently perform its various duties.

• You have great communication skills, both writing- and speaking-wise;
• You excellent technical writing skills and you are fully proficient in English;
• You want to bring agility to space and develop new services based on high-level technologies;
• You are interested in working in a start-up environment.
